SUMMARY:Creating Safe & Welcoming Environments for Traumatized LGBTQ Youth
DESCRIPTION:Safe Place\, Safe Spaces: Creating Safe & Welcoming Environments for Traumatized LGBTQ Youth \nLesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and queer or questioning (LGBTQ) youth experience trauma at higher rates than their straight peers. Common trauma experienced by these youth include bullying\, harassment\, traumatic loss\, intimate partner violence and physical and sexual abuse\, as well as traumatic forms of societal stigma\, bias and rejection. Historically\, professionals have failed to recognize and meet the needs of traumatized LGBTQ youth\, leading to poor engagement\, ineffective treatment and in some cases\, perpetuating the youth’s traumatic experiences. To ensure these youth receive the care they deserve\, providers need resources to create safe spaces and familiarize themselves with the issues facing traumatized LGBTQ youth. \nParticipant Learning Objectives: \n\nDefine the distinct traumas\, including bullying\, harassment\, and social stigma\, often experienced by LGBTQ+ youth and recognize how these impact mental health\nUnderstand the impact of systemic discrimination and bias against LGBTQ+ youth\nDevelop strategies to create therapeutic settings that are safe\, inclusive and welcoming for traumatized LGBTQ+ youth\, promoting a sense of security and trust\nUse inclusive language and communication styles\, creating an environment where LGBTQ+ youth feel seen\, heard and respected\nExplore current research findings on trauma experienced by LGBTQ+ youth\, critically analyzing research methodologies and implications for clinical practice\nUnderstand the importance of establishing collaborative partnerships with LGBTQ+ community organizations and resources\n\nThis Program meets the Anti-Oppressive Social Work Practice content requirement. (6 Category I CEUs) \nFeaturing: \nJason Manning-Beekman\, EdD\, a licensed clinical professional counselor providing therapy and supervision as the clinical director of Radiant Therapy Counseling LLC\, in Burtonsville\, Maryland. Dr. Manning-Beekman has worked in all levels of care\, but most recently worked in Baltimore\, Maryland providing individual therapy and family therapy to LGBTQIA+ children\, adults and their families. He has extensive experience working with children and young adults\, but specifically those processing their sexual orientation and gender identity.

SUMMARY:Building on the Strengths of Young People Who Have Endured Hardships
DESCRIPTION:Potomac Community Services is offering this seminar in honor of their 25th Anniversary.  Brook Lane is pleased to be a Community Sponsor. \nThe presentation will first summarize the three foundational frameworks that prepare us to develop young people capable of thriving through good and difficult times – positive youth   development\, resilience\, and trauma-sensitive care. The program will cover the proven effects of childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences on the brain\, body\, and behavior   throughout the lifetime. \nThis program will then introduce the essentials of delivering   trauma care and offer a few strategies to APPLY these principles in our work with children and youth. The program will focus on the power of well-boundaried human connection in healing as well as the imperative of restoring a sense of control back to people who have been traumatized. \nFinally\, we will discuss the type of open\, trusting communication that positions clinicians to reach teenagers and young adults. Then the resilience model will be discussed in the context of adolescent  behavioral change. All youth possess strengths and their behavior is changed only when those strengths are recognized and built upon. \nParticipant Learning Objectives: \n\nUnderstand the behavioral change process and how a  strength-based approach combats the demoralization that can paralyze behavioral change progress.\nBe better prepared to eliminate shame from interactions by focusing on building confidence in youth rooted in their existing competencies.\nCommunicate with youth in a way that builds on their existing strengths rather than undermines their forward movement. This objective focuses on shifting away from approaching youth with lectures and giving control back to people from whom it has been taken away.\nCommunicate with youth and young adults in a way that restores control to their decision-making processes.\nUnderstand a stress management strategy that is designed to move youth away from self-destructive quick fixes and towards positive behaviors.\nUnderstand the critical importance of well-boundaried connection to trauma-informed care.\n\nFeaturing:  Kenneth Ginsburg\, M.D.\, M.S.Ed  \nDr. Ginsburg is a pediatrician specializing in Adolescent Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia\, a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine\, and Co-Founder and Director of Programs at Center for Parent and Teen Communication. \nHis research over the last 30 years has focused on facilitating youth to develop their own solutions to social problems and to teach clinicians how to better serve them. He co-developed the Teen-Centered Method\, a mixed qualitative/quantitative methodology that enables youth to generate\, prioritize\, and explain their own ideas. Dr. Ginsburg has more than 200 publications\, including 44 original research articles\, clinical practice articles\, nine parenting books\, and a multimedia toolkit for professionals. \nHe also serves Philadelphia’s Youth Enduring Homelessness as Director of Health Services at Covenant House Pennsylvania. The theme that ties together his clinical practice\, teaching\, research and advocacy efforts is that of building on the strength of teenagers by fostering their internal resilience. His goal is to translate the best of what is known from research and practice into practical approaches parents\, professionals and communities can use to prepare children and teens to thrive. \nRegister Today
