SUMMARY:The Neuroscience of Addiction and Prevention
DESCRIPTION:The growing gap between biological and environmental evolution presents a unique opportunity for exploring the human brain\, its strengths and vulnerabilities in an interactive and stimulating way. To really understand substance use disorders (and use that understanding to increase resiliency) we must first understand the brain\, especially the evolutionary constraints that have shaped its fundamental structures and functions. This presentation builds on the growing neuroscientific understanding of human behavior to explain the intrinsic vulnerabilities that emerge from the interaction of biological and environmental substance use actors and the impact that drug abuse has on brain circuitry and behavior. It also will explore the rationale behind the development of evidence-based prevention and treatment approaches in addiction. \nParticipant Learning Objectives: \n• Have a greater understanding of the structure\, function\, & evolution of the human brain \n• Understand the effects of addictive drugs: focus on the dopaminergic synapse and the neurophysiological changes that underlie substance use disorders \n• Explain inter-individual differences in risk: the multifactorial phenomena behind the fact that not every person exposed to an addictive substance develops a substance use disorder \n• Recognize leveraging the current understanding of the brain and the allure & effects of addictive drugs to develop effective prevention strategies and programs \n• Describe the nature & role of various evidence-based interventions designed to alleviate and/or reverse the devastating impact of addictive drugs \nDownload Seminar Flyer \nRegister Today \nFeaturing: \nDr. Ruben Baler\, PhD\, joined the Science Policy Branch in NIDA’s Office of Science Policy and Communications in October 2004 as a Health Science Administrator. He has gathered critical insight from diverse disciplines\, which he combines to advance NIDA’s scientific mission as it intersects with cellular and molecular biology\, genetics\, immunology\, bioinformatics\, neuroscience\, and neuroethics. Dr. Baler’s many contributions to other dissemination efforts include scientific writing\, teaching\, public speaking to lay audiences\, and fielding interview requests. He received his PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Biology from the University of Miami. \n

SUMMARY:Creating Safe & Welcoming Environments for Traumatized LGBTQ Youth
DESCRIPTION:Safe Place\, Safe Spaces: Creating Safe & Welcoming Environments for Traumatized LGBTQ Youth \nLesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender and queer or questioning (LGBTQ) youth experience trauma at higher rates than their straight peers. Common trauma experienced by these youth include bullying\, harassment\, traumatic loss\, intimate partner violence and physical and sexual abuse\, as well as traumatic forms of societal stigma\, bias and rejection. Historically\, professionals have failed to recognize and meet the needs of traumatized LGBTQ youth\, leading to poor engagement\, ineffective treatment and in some cases\, perpetuating the youth’s traumatic experiences. SUMMARY:Building on the Strengths of Young People Who Have Endured Hardships
DESCRIPTION:Potomac Community Services is offering this seminar in honor of their 25th Anniversary.  Brook Lane is pleased to be a Community Sponsor. \nThe presentation will first summarize the three foundational frameworks that prepare us to develop young people capable of thriving through good and difficult times – positive youth   development\, resilience\, and trauma-sensitive care. The program will cover the proven effects of childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences on the brain\, body\, and behavior   throughout the lifetime. \nThis program will then introduce the essentials of delivering   trauma care and offer a few strategies to APPLY these principles in our work with children and youth. The program will focus on the power of well-boundaried human connection in healing as well as the imperative of restoring a sense of control back to people who have been traumatized. \nFinally\, we will discuss the type of open\, trusting communication that positions clinicians to reach teenagers and young adults. Then the resilience model will be discussed in the context of adolescent  behavioral change. All youth possess strengths and their behavior is changed only when those strengths are recognized and built upon. \nParticipant Learning Objectives: \n\nUnderstand the behavioral change process and how a  strength-based approach combats the demoralization that can paralyze behavioral change progress.\nBe better prepared to eliminate shame from interactions by focusing on building confidence in youth rooted in their existing competencies.\nCommunicate with youth in a way that builds on their existing strengths rather than undermines their forward movement. This objective focuses on shifting away from approaching youth with lectures and giving control back to people from whom it has been taken away.\nCommunicate with youth and young adults in a way that restores control to their decision-making processes.\nUnderstand a stress management strategy that is designed to move youth away from self-destructive quick fixes and towards positive behaviors.\nUnderstand the critical importance of well-boundaried connection to trauma-informed care.\n\nFeaturing:  Kenneth Ginsburg\, M.D.\, M.S.Ed  \nDr. Ginsburg is a pediatrician specializing in Adolescent Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia\, a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine\, and Co-Founder and Director of Programs at Center for Parent and Teen Communication. \nHis research over the last 30 years has focused on facilitating youth to develop their own solutions to social problems and to teach clinicians how to better serve them. He co-developed the Teen-Centered Method\, a mixed qualitative/quantitative methodology that enables youth to generate\, prioritize\, and explain their own ideas. Dr. Ginsburg has more than 200 publications\, including 44 original research articles\, clinical practice articles\, nine parenting books\, and a multimedia toolkit for professionals. \nHe also serves Philadelphia’s Youth Enduring Homelessness as Director of Health Services at Covenant House Pennsylvania. The theme that ties together his clinical practice\, teaching\, research and advocacy efforts is that of building on the strength of teenagers by fostering their internal resilience. His goal is to translate the best of what is known from research and practice into practical approaches parents\, professionals and communities can use to prepare children and teens to thrive. \nRegister Today
